The third grades will be participating in the "BOOK IT!" National Reading Incentive Program. This five-month program, sponsored by Pizza Hut, motivates children to read more, and helps pre-readers develop a positive attitude toward learning to read.

This is how the program works:

The teacher sets monthly reading goals for each child in the class.

When a reading goal is met, the teacher gives the child a pizza award certificate.

The child can redeem this certificate at a participating Pizza Hut restaurant for a free, one-topping, Personal Pan Pizza and, on the first visit, a button and a recognition sticker for the button. The child receives another pizza and sticker on each successive visit.

If the child completes all five months of the program, he or she will be awarded a BOOK IT! All-Star Reading medallion with neck ribbon at Pizza Hut.

If all children in the class meet their reading goals in any four of the five months of the program, the entire class and the teacher will be given a free pizza party.

You can help your child develop as a reader by participating in the "BOOK IT!" Program as a reading "partner". For example, you can select books together at the library, read to or with your child and discuss what you've read, track reading progress toward each month's goal, and encourage your child to become a "BOOK IT!" All-Star Reader.

You, more than anyone, can help your child reach the ultimate goal of the "BOOK IT!" Program - acquiring a love of books and the written word that will last a lifetime.
